THE THOMPSON COMMUNITY CENTRE

The heart of Thompson is the Thompson Community Centre, well known throughout Richmond for its excellent recreational amenities and yearly events. Open daily and surrounded by the 8.1 acre Thompson Park, this 21,000 square foot facility includes a banquet hall, games room, gymnasium, fully equipped fitness room, and two full kitchens adjacent to 4 multipurpose rooms. Outside in the park are soccer fields, baseball diamonds, basketball courts, lit tennis courts, climbing boulders, a fully lit roller hockey and lacrosse box, as well as extensive walking trails.

The building architecture was inspired by the Vancouver International Airport, with the surrounding landscape designed to echo Richmond's unique geography. In the last decade use of the Thompson Community Centre has risen dramatically, and residents from across Richmond regularly visit and enjoy its modern facilities and recreational programs.

Many yearly events are held at the Thompson Community Centre including a Basketball Tournament and local SWAP Meet, but the centre is best known for the annual "Nibbles and Bits of Richmond" festival held annually on the second weekend of September. Every year local restaurants offer sample-size portions of their best dishes to over 12,000 attendees, and over the years the festival has grown to include a craft and exhibitors fair, a children's carnival, and a sports competition.

PARKS & NATURAL AREAS

TERRA NOVA RURAL PARK

Terra Nova Rural Park is located adjacent to the Sturgeon Banks and the West Dyke Trail in the far north west corner of Thompson. Featuring picturesque views of the North Shore Mountains and the Tidal Flats, Terra Nova Rural Park is an award winning green space that continues to expand, adding new trails, gardens and natural wildlife habitats. The recently added Healing Garden and Sharing Farm are particular favourite spots for Richmond residents.

TERRA NOVA NATURAL AREA

South of the Natural Area is the Terra Nova Natural Park. An old-field style habitat, the park features native plants and a natural slough. Viewing platforms provide great views, and the park is a popular wildlife spotting area. Home to the Terra Nova Bird Sanctuary, over 1.4 million birds including eagles, herons and gulls migrate through the area every year.
