How to Feng Shui Your Home

Attention all sellers and builders, as you know the Richmond market is very Feng Shui oriented. I have written offers that are subject to changing unit numbers so it does not include the number 4 or had to discount the listing price of a house due to the fact that it is on a ‘T’. Feng Shui is all about balancing the energy in your home and creating a supportive environment. I have put together a Coles Notes version of a few of the basic Feng Shui principles and some tips to help remedy the trouble areas in your home.

Feng Shui - Living Room

What to Look For

  • A building should be placed with mountains in the back (strong supporting energy) and a low landscape of plain in the front.
  • The kitchen should be shielded from the front entrance, it is the room that nourishes your family. The stove and sink should not be directly across from each other, this symbolizes arguments between family members.
  • When laying out your living area, make sure your couch is against a solid wall. This creates the mountain energy  of support.
  • In the bedroom make sure you have the same mountain support. Your bed should be directly against the wall and there should be no windows behind your bed. If the layout only allows for the bed to be under a window, make sure to purchase a solid headboard.
  • Lush plants represent an increase in opportunities. Place plants in a home office or diagonally across from the main entrance way.
  • Numbers in Feng Shui are pretty complicated, they all have their own distinct meanings, but there are some that have better Feng Shui than others. 8 is seen as a number with good Feng Shui, it is seen as lucky and  a number that symbolizes prosperity and abundance

Things To Avoid

  • Beware of cul-de-sacs, it is important that your home is situated within a circle, so if you are in a cul-de-sac be sure to create the landscaping in a circle formation to lessen the effects of cutting the circle
  • Do not put a staircase right in front of the doorway, this suggests that money and opportunities are flowing into the house, rolling down the stairs and flowing right back out. When building a new house, offset the stairs from the front door. If you already have a staircase at the front door put a textured rug between the staircase and the door.
  • Do not put the front door directly facing the back door. The energy will flow right through the house without flowing through any other rooms. In Eastern philosophy this can also mean money coming into your house and then going right back out. To remedy this situation you can put a divider between the two doors, or if possible use an alternate door as your main entry, such as a garage door.
  • Do not have the kitchen at the front of the home, some experts believe this may represent eating problems.
  • In the bedroom avoid have any sharp objects directly above your bed, an example of this would be a pendant fixture
  • Feng Shui experts have noticed that the location the toilet tends to have a correlation with health issues.Check the layout of your house and make sure that if you draw a straight line going across your toilet it is not in line with where your bed is. To remedy this problem place a mirror directly opposite the toilet.
